Spring Checklist

Before You Turn on Your A/C, Do This...

Before You Turn on Your A/C, Do This

#1. Check Your Filter: Did you know a dirty A/C filter could increase your energy use up to 15%*? That’s according to Energy.Gov! Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder, which causes stress on your system. It also drives up energy costs. Here at R&L Heating and Cooling, we recommend switching out your A/C filter ever 30-60 days.

#2. Clean Your Outdoor Unit: Something that can also make your A/C system work harder and drive up your electricity bill are dirty coils. Make sure to clear away dirt and debris (such as grass clippings, fallen leaves, etc.) that may have collected around the condenser unit during the fall and winter seasons. You should trim bushes, grasses, and gardens back at least 2 feet around your A/C unit to allow it enough airflow to work efficiently.

Warning: Do not spray your garden hose directly at the condenser coils. This can push debris deeper inside you A/C unit. Instead, make sure to angle the hose nozzle so it sprays perpendicular to the side of the coil.

#3. Clean the Condensate Drain Line: Your air conditioner doesn’t just bring fresh air into your home. It also lowers humidity. Your system has a drain line that discards moisture which is taken from the air, and just like any other drain in your home, it can get clogged. A blockage here can create a great place for icky mold and nasty bacteria to grow, which could build up and damage your system, as well as the surrounding areas of your home. The solution for this? Keep your condensate drain line clear!

#4. Adjust Vents or Registers: As we mentioned before, in order to operate efficiently, your system needs proper airflow. Make sure the vents and registers around your home are not blocked by décor or furniture. You can adjust registers in rooms for your comfort, but don’t fully close more than one or two of them. This is because shutting registers completely could damage your system, force it to work harder and less efficiently, and increase energy costs.

#5. Schedule Your A/C Tune-up: The secret to prolonging your system’s lifespan is to keep it properly maintained. Remember how important oil changes and maintenance is for your car? It’s the same concept for your A/C system. Lack of (and poor) maintenance is one of the top reasons HVAC systems breakdown. Regular maintenance will increase your system’s efficiency, increase your comfort, decrease your energy usage, help keep warranties in check, and, when done consistently, promote longer system life.
